Parliamentary Secretary Deepak Obhrai’s support for the 62nd Anniversary of Mon National Day
Greetings and happy Mon National Day to all.
My Government has been very strong on the issue of democracy and human rights in Burma, repeatedly engaging itself in international efforts to confront the Burmese regime.
Some of these efforts include:
On December 13, 2007 Canada imposed the toughest sanctions in the world on Burma, and has continually urged others to exert pressure on the military junta until it demonstrates a commitment to undertake genuine reform.
Canada has regularly called upon the Burmese regime to free all political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi, and to engage in a genuine dialogue with members of the democratic opposition and the different ethnic groups.
Canada strongly supports UN efforts to address the situation in Burma, including the efforts of the UNSG Special Advisor and UN Special Rapporteur.
Canada was one of the first countries to respond to Cyclone Nargis, and has contributed more than $25 million to humanitarian relief efforts.
