The first people in Burma to leave definite traces of their settlement were the Mons who orginally came dowm the Mekong River. By at least the 3rd century BC the Mons not only occupied the entire Me Nam Valley but also spread of the sittang Valley, doubtless, through the gaps i the estern mountian wall of Burma. Their port capital was Thaton, not far from the isthmian portage routes and through this window to the sea they saw india. They brought many of their native animastic beliefs into the fold of Theravada Buddhism. They enhanced the power and prestige of their king by adopting the Hindu ritual of coronation. They developed a new art of sculpture by blending the native tradition of wood carving with Greco-indian conventions of making images of the Buddha. They built stupas on the indian tradition. Within a few decades the Mons became the advanced people in Southeast Asia and they assumed the role of teachers to their neighbour, spreading Theravada Buddhism and their new culture over the entire region. Their cousins, the Khmers were the first to benifit, followed by the Burmese. Even in the 13th century, when their glory has passed and they were a conquered people in the Me Nam Valley, the Mons Freely shared their cultural heritage with the new arrivals. the tais people.

The history of any indivdiual country in this region would be in complete without any mention made of Mon influncece. As the pioneer of civilization for this region, they had introduced the irrigation agriculture system, Buddhism and architecture to the Burmese. The early Pagan( old Burma empire) had addopted architecture, Buddhism and Burmese scripture from the Mons after their kingdom of Suvnaphom ( Thaton, Mon State, Burma) was annexed by the king Anawratha in 1057 A.D. The Mons Kingdom Hongsavtoi (Pagu) was destroyed in 1757 A.D by king U Aung Ze Ya
. Their higher culture was taken as war booty to upper Burma when many thousands of learned Buddhish Monks and civilians had been facing holocaust. Since then the Mons became a countryless nation and many of them fled to the southern most of Burma and in Thailand. Mean while in Thailand they were given special areas to live and found sympathic favor under the Thai king, himself a descendant of the Mons.
